Hi everyone
So yesterday i was watching the news and i saw that starting this week (i think 2/24/13) in the U.S., people found downloading stuff illegally from the internet will get a letter from their ISP saying that they have been "spotted" doing that. This got me very interested so i decided to google it and find more about it.
The page i found was this. Then, i investigated how they would know that you've been downloading that stuff and it says that when you use a torrent your IP is associated with more IP's or something like that.
So what do you think about it?
i have my questions though, like
-will it only work with torrents?
-will there be a way to "bypass it"

It only works with torrents, since the way to flie transfer things like that needs the IP. read more about Peer 2 Peer sharing. I dont know if this would affect me (since I dont live in the US). But anyway, i rarely use torrents.

Supposedly, there is some way to bypass it, but I think its fake.

I think yes. There is no way for them to know you downloaded from there (unless the websites owners gives that info...)

I don't use torrents. I suggest everyone else do the same.

Well it all depends on how much you torrent stuff, and how bad the copyright is. I only torrented twice, and that was because I didn't want to spend a boatload of money on a single program.

Anyways, if you have like...4 torrents, you're fine. But when you get an email, watch what you're doing. Your ISP can shut you off for copyright infrigiment.

There's also MEGA. Because of the encryption, they can know that you downloaded "something" from MEGA, but they can't know what it is. Not even MEGA servers know it, so MEGA can't give that information to ISPs either.

I'm not sure how true that is with mediafire and other file sharing sites.

But yeah, all this shitty copyright stuff sucks.

Well, I'm guessing they could monitor your HTTP traffic and such, but you could completely bypass this with a VPN and they can't see anything.

Hmm interesting, what's the best free or "crackeable" VPN?

There seems to be a flaw on this.

First, what will they do if you use the free wifi of, lets say, a restaurant?

Also, using torrents doesn't necessary means its for illegal things. Take for example OCRemix, in which they use torrents to share music that is not copyrighted (since they are remixes)

I'm pretty sure this system is just to block downloading copyrighted content. That seems to be generally what torrents are used for, but I don't think they care about the legal torrenting.

Plus they don't actually stop you from doing it aside from sending you warnings and maybe shutting off your internet for a day. Not a very effective system for the people who really want to download illegal stuff.

Perhaps you need to read the article more carefully...

Your ISP is not going to fine you and they are not going to permanently block you from the internet. If they did that, then everybody would just hop over to another ISP, and they would lose their customers. Seriously, this system isn't all that bad. It is mostly meant to stop the people who are unaware of what they are doing by pirating stuff.
