I want to install Ubuntu 12.10 but my dad doesn't like it/understands it and i'm wondering, is therea way to install it "hidden"?. i mean like, instead of booting into the grub, it'll boot into windows 7 directly and to boot into linux i'll use a usb or some kind of thing.
I hope you understand what i mean. Thanks

You should explain to him, or not do it.

One thing you can do is install it in a USB pendrive directly. Then you can boot it from USB in any computer and you'll have your linux you can carry everywhere

I used one last year while at school, I'd use my linux USB on the school computers instead of the slow and shitty windows XP installation they had. It's very useful.

There are two methods to install it:
1. Real linux installation. Just use the normal linux installer, and specify the USB disk as the partition to install into. Also you'll have to tell it to install GRUB into the USB and not the HDD, this is important! It's hidden in a button saying "Advanced" towards the end of the install IIRC.
2. Live USB installation. This uses the install CD ISO so the linux files are compressed and take less space. Use a program like Unetbootin, give it the ISO and the USB, tell it to save some space for your documents, and install.

I'd recommend Live USB installation, linux runs faster thanks to the compression
The only problem is that you might have problems getting the propietary graphics drivers to work. ATI/AMD ones seemed to work, but not NVIDIA ones. But if you aren't going to do graphics-intensive stuff this is not a problem

Hope it helps!

ok but to install it using the real installation (first method), don't you have to make the ext4,swap partitions by yourself? (i've read that)
so the live usb installation would be ok? i'm asking because i want to get used to linux and change some settings and add files like it is installed.
also, for the real installation, i've also read that the usb doesn't last very long because of all the writing or something like that, is that true?

P.S. i have a 8gb usb

Yes, and yes.

The USB doesn't last long because when you press save it saves at that instant. Where when you use Casper-rw/live install it only saves files when you shut the computer down. That means less writes, which will make the USB last longer.
However the arch Linux wiki has a page about minimizing writes if you do go for the real Linux installation.

nope, the Live USB thing doesn't keep all the stuff in RAM and write when shutdown! I know that for sure.
It would be superdangerous if your computer shuts down directly, you'd lose all the work.

You could try using VirtualBox (it runs almost any operating system (but it does have really small list of unsupported operating systems) in almost any operating system (provided it's not DOS or something lame like that)). The only problem is that Windows is still running, so you need some RAM to run operating systems (2GB of RAM should be enough).

VirtualBox is like running Linux "inside windows", I think that's not what you want
I recommend you go for the Live USB installation

Alright i'll go with the live installation. Does it matter if i useUniversal USB Installer or unetbootin? or is there like, "x program is better than y"?
Also, with the live installation, will i be able to install programs (packets, i don't know what they're called in linux)?

EDIT: will this work? https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD/Persistence

Yes it will work, but it's the "manual" way of doing things.
UNetbootin or that other USB installer do the same thing automatically.

It doesn't matter which program you use, they should all install the live cd with persistence.
Yes, with persistence you can install packages

Thanks  Dirbaio and coolas1! You helped me a lot
This is what i did:

-i used Universal USB Installer
-deleted the casper-rw file
-made a casper-rw partition as ext2
-done

i changed the background and made an empty file and it worked . Now i wonder, should i run the updater?

Don't run the updates, They aren't strictly necessary, and they'll fill a lot of space in the casper-rw partition

All right. I just discovered, it runs really slow, i mean comparing it to a hdd installation. If i run like 2 programs at the same time, one of the crashes while opening. Looks like i have to convince my dad .
Will installing it alongside with windows 7, make windows 7 slower?

HDD install won't make windows slower.

Also slowness depends on the USB drive you use. Some are faster than others.
But if you get crashing, then it might be because out of RAM... How much RAM does that computer have? 1GB should be enough for most of the stuff...

I'm pretty sure you should just go for an HDD install if you can convince your dad.
That's what will get you the best result in the long run.
