Most recent release: 2-world demo

As you may have read from the thread title, the hack's name is still up in the air.

So I'm going to be using this as a short introduction of sorts before I get to the hack. My name is TRS, and I came over here from SMWCentral, where I have a thread for this. I don't really know why, but I just got the urge to try to make a hack of something other than SMW, even if it was just going to be a few levels, and NSMB was my first choice. I lurked around here and looked around when I needed help, and I finally registered to show a demo of my NSMB hack, which I haven't named yet.

I have a few reservations about this, since I recently read a few posts that said something along the lines of "I'm sick of seeing NSMB tilesets", which I'm pretty much exclusively using. But I'm making the thread anyway, because more feedback can never be bad.

I'll keep this short, so I'll just leave a screenshot of each level and the patch and I'll be on my way for now.

Welcome, I like your level design so far. As gridattack said, don't sweat it about the Wii tilesets. For the record, the reason people dislike them is really because everyone uses them in the same way, but it looks like your levels are more versatile than others.

An updated version has been uploaded/posted. I finally added some broken pipe graphics (I can't believe I hadn't done it before) and a few other misc. changes.

Nice to see you on this site. I like your hack and as for NSMBWii tileset, I think that people are annoyed by those because of New Super Hacker Bros, discontinued hack that has annoying level design because of activators abuse. And well, NSMB Wii fits the NSMB style - what else you would rip. Super Mario World in NSMB would look odd (it doesn't look 3D), and many DS and Wii games have more or less... realistic graphics style.

This hack looks really nice! And to be serious, I don't care if hacks contain NSMBW tilesets. As long as the level design is good.

What are you talking about? I don't think that our hack had an annoying level design. Also, we didn't abuse the activators.

ARGH NSMBWII TILESETS U R UNORIGINAL COPYCAT ASFADSAFSDAS

j/k

Gotta say that the NSMBWii grassland tileset, combined with NSMB backgrounds, reminds me of the beta grassland tileset, as seen in those coop videos.

And otherwise, your level design seems nice... keep it up.

Sorry, no new level(s) yet, but I have been redoing the sky tileset. I always thought the mushrooms looked really bad:

Here's what the improved tileset looks like:

For comparison, here's the old tileset:

That's actually how the mushrooms look in-game in NSMBWii. The graphics rips I found on MFGG don't include the mushroom tops, so I had ripped them from Reggie. I decided to stop being lazy and actually rip them from in-game.

So that my post can actually have content, have a screenshot:

I agree, it looks way better now. I just noticed though, the brick blocks in that screenshot have the blue underground palette when they should be yellow.

Well, they "should" be brown because ingame, blue blocks are only used underground, but IMO they don't look bad in these levels.

They look nice with the BG

I have no idea why that is, to be honest. I've just ignored it.

EDIT: Nevermind, it's because of the bottom background layer apparently. Switching the bottom background from 61 to 50 makes them brown

Ripped the desert tileset and started working on 2-1:

If you move to the left at the start of the level, you'll find some coins with a boomerang bro guarding them. Boomerang bros are proving to be difficult enemies to place at the very beginning of the world, so I'm trying to place them in less menacing positions.

But as you can see, I still got hit.

Also, here's what the tileset looks like if you want to know:
