IMPORTANT NOTICE (21st November 2015): Due to computer risks and a wide array of technical problems, this hack is now no longer in development, and probably won't be any time in the future unless I come across a miracle.

Introducing my first NSMB hack ever: New Super Mario Bros. Empire!

Let me explain this hack in detail. NSMB Empire is a hack that runs on the theme of towns, villages and cities. It's urban themed, so to speak. In this demo, only World 1 is complete, but the full release will include all-new levels; every single one will be replaced. It's also noticeably harder than the original New Super Mario Bros, so don't expect to not lose any lives along the way.

Also, there are a few things present in the demo that won't be carried over to the full release. Firstly, you may find that the W1 cannon is blocked by a spike block; that block will be removed in the full release where World 4 will be playable. You'll also find that 2-1 (in the full release) will be completeable and not just a "thanks for playing!" type level like in the demo. The demo may also have some bugs, so point those out in the comments if you find any!

Here is a link to a video of 1-1:

And here are a few screenshots:

Things that will be included in the full release:

And last but certainly not least, the demo patch download link!

Earlier this year I took a pretty long hiatus from NSMB Empire, but I'm happy to say I've finally spent more time working on it, and it's looking great so far. World 3 is now completely finished. I still haven't managed to import custom music yet, but there's still chance it'll make it in.

Here's another screenshot to keep things interesting:

Just another progress update... I can now finally say that custom music has been successfully imported! Also, I've decided to go for a new title screen look that may look better to some. World 4 is also currently going pretty well.

Unfortunate Edit: Due to to various unexpected problems, only the title screen will have custom music. Unfortunately, most tracks always end up failing when imported, so I suppose I have to stop dreaming big with this and accept the fact that most of the music will be vanilla no matter what I do.

Second Edit: Currently experimenting with other methods of custom music. May be a few changes of plan but hopefully I'll get there in the end. Wish me luck.

Since the graphics used in my hack have had some pretty positive reception, I thought I'd release a few "free-to-use" tilesets for the public. Feel free to put your own stuff in the unused space and/or mess around with the palettes. If you use them, please give credit if possible.

Warp Cannon tileset:

Bramble tileset:

SMW Ghost House remake tileset:

NOTE: More tilesets will be added in future; make sure to check back once in a while!

I'm very late to the party here, but I recently downloaded and played this hack on my flash cart and I thought I'd give some feedback. Here are my honest thoughts:

Overall, it was a pretty good hack. Not perfect, but still very enjoyable and great for those who want a challenge.

7.5/10

I've recently had a go at this hack. I'll come clean and admit I still haven't finished everything (it's very hard), but I've covered enough to have a valid opinion. Here goes my feedback review thingy:

Overall, this hack is very professional and definitely worth playing. It has a few little issues here and there, but there's nothing that will really stop anyone from enjoying this game. (except maybe all the rage-quits from the hard challenges )

8.5/10

Just quickly checking in to say that W2 is basically done (just 2-A to go) and I'm going to give you guys some more teaser pics to build up hype.

(warning: minor spoilers!)

In other news, I've also re-textured all the world maps apart from 5 and 8 (will get to them soon), and I've also re-textured Peach into a new character who I'll explain more about in future.

Alright, I've just tried the above. I think I've created a monster.

Seriously though, what am I doing wrong this time? I will note that I opened the palette before the bitmaps, but that wouldn't make a difference, right?

Just a quick little update; I have now fixed all the little "demo-bugs" such as the missing Star Coin in 1-4 and the rope bugs in 1-3. The downloadable demo will still have the bugs, but they'll be gone from the full version.

Also, just to be a real tease, here are a couple of World 2 screenshots (spoilers):

Stay tuned for more progress news, though I won't be giving away any more major spoilers!

Judging by the trailer alone, your level design needs some improvement; everything is way too flat and empty. You need to add more scenery and obstacles.

My main problem with this isn't the level design though, the main issue is the lack of a coherent theme. From what you've said, the hack seems to just be a random hodge-podge of old NSMB assets. All the great hacks on this site tend to have at least something of a unique theme; Clone Tag Team utilizes the unused clone feature, The New Worlds has a NSMB U feel, and even the endless sea of remake hacks specialize in the themes of the games they're based off of.

You need to find your theme, your gimmick, your element, something that will really grab the attention of the players. Nobody wants to play a hack that doesn't have its own identity. I'm sure you can accomplish this, but you'll need to put in the effort.

At this point, everything that could be done with the current tools and knowledge has been done.

Although I agree with most of what StapleButter pointed out, that one sentence couldn't be more wrong. Yes, we've had all the technical work with the game done and dusted, but there's so much creative work that hasn't been done in NSMB. Compared to SMW's 1500+ hacks, NSMB only has 11. It's an untapped gold mine. There are so many levels, worlds, themes, gimmicks and such that have yet to be done.

I think there are two real reasons why we don't see a lot of newcomers to NSMBHD. The first is that most kids nowadays would rather just use some mainstream game like Minecraft to vent their creativity rather than take the precious time to use the NSMBe program. The second is the fact that most people who want to hack a modern Mario game will go straight to NSMBWii because it's newer than the NSMB DS. I personally chose to hack NSMB DS purely based on the fact that Wii games are a right pain to test and share.

I haven't tried using the new Xdelta patch, but I can confirm that the NSMBe patch works! Now I can finally play it!

Thanks for taking the time to fix the issues. I'll give you some feedback on the hack once I've finished playing it.

EDIT: Well, forget what I said above. The patch works, but the actual game doesn't run; all I get is a white screen. Looks like my plans to play this hack have been foiled yet again.
