I am alive surprisingly, just very inactive on this forum XD. However, I do intend to start being more active again especially as I get even further from mainstream websites. Also, I am practically dead on the sites, I just have the accounts. I'm not really using Discord or anything like that, so everything I do is via the forums and thus I am not stuck there. I do think that its pretty easy to get a website active again, assuming you have extreme dedication for the members. I've experienced something similar with 3DSPaint where I did like 95% of the work reviving the website. Hell, when I joined, it was practically a ghost-town, yet today, only 3 years later, the site is once again very active and there are not one but two new top-groups (albeit both of them are my own, one sitting at 133 and the other 100). Considering this, I do think it is very possible to get even a site that's much more specific on what it's for, that being an NSMB hacking forum, active again. It only really takes 5 to get it semi-active, 20 to make it have far more unique activity. I don't think five people being extremely active here would be too hard of a job, but twenty is harder in the modern day. By "active" I don't mean "posts a few times a day", I mean "posts many times daily, almost to the point that this is the only site he or she uses". That's essentially the only way to keep a site active without tons of users being active. Either you'd need time or quantity to keep the site active. I can't blame people for moving onto Discord as it's far more active and even if NSMB's discord isn't, it's just far easier, however I can't pretend I like it. Plus, requiring an account to view any information is very annoying which is why I'd always prefer a forum system. Not to mention, sites like these are just comfy in general. The more I cut down on mainstream websites though, the more I will absolutely be on forum sites. I barely use them already, now I just have to justify straight-up deletion of them. Outside of DeviantArt (which I have enjoy due to how bad it is), I pretty much want them all gone. I'm setting everything up to be perfectly to my liking essentially. Email+RSS notifications for whatever I need essentially. I would unironically recommend using email, IRC, and forums over Discord anyday. However, I can't expect most people to use that stuff, especially if I couldn't convince them to switch over (or even to use XMPP and just make a damn-good client). It's hard to get people to switch platforms unless their friends are on the platform, and if their friends don't frequently switch platforms, good luck. I'll echo what others have said about Discord not exactly replacing forum posts like this.
I'm more active at modding Super Mario Kart at this point; we have a Discord and we have shared some information on how to edit a certain thing. The hassle? Trying to search that same information that someone is trying to fix or edit some time later. It sucks searching with Discord as well as the solution is scattered across multiple messaged. It would be better if, for example, that was a thread post solely focused on explaining how to do that thin. Also yes, we had a NSMBHD IRC chat before discord was a thing. In general it's good future-proofing to build an information "database" that you can rely on later down the line, but it's a manual endeavor which is tedious to maintain. On NSMBHD, an incomplete version of said repository would be the wiki. |

On another note, I've even begun to start trying to sort out an archival system for me and friends, perhaps an FTP server of sorts. Essentially, I would have 5TB to 20TB drives setup in a RAID system (or whatever it was called). Certainly not like the "public-database" thing you mentioned, however it *would* help me and my friends not have to rely on anything like Google Drive. It would be a private server of course, so only friends and family. Though at this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if it were better for me to manage something like that than everyone pay for subscription services (sure, they can make local archives, but many people don't do that for some reason now). I'd have to make it easily accessible for the average person, but it would work if I could get it setup.
