I don't know, why you guys don't use your desktop for shortcuts and stuff.
 The desktop actually exists for that.  Here is mine: Magic FTW!!!

Actually, you can't have shortcuts and/or files on GNOME 3's desktop by default.
There is a setting for it, but you can't do it by default. |

My desktop. It's very...plain... It isn't shown here, but the top panel there contains the title of windows that are maximized, as well as their buttons. So when I maximize a window, it's like if I didn't have a panel at all because no extra space is taken. |
