I've been working on this hack on and off over the past year or so, and it's finally in a releasable state ! So far, I've finished all the custom levels up to the first 2 Worlds, but I plan on (eventually) making an entire game's worth of custom levels. It'll take a long time, but I'm dedicated to this game and its modding scene.

I do plan on making custom MvL stages at some point, but I'd like to prioritize the main levels first. They'll come soon, though, don't worry!

Ok so update on the hack: Ignore what I said in the main post, I'm only gonna do 6 main worlds. I will have a bonus World 7 though, so that'll be fun! Progress on World 3 is going smoothly, and I should have a download out in a month or two!

If you don't want a W8, I know there's a code hack out there to remove unneeded world icons. I mean, New Super Mario Run DS used something that made only the W1 icon visible, so such a hack probably exists.
And yay, almost at 50%! Don't rush it, release it when it's done. I will download it.

The way I'm handling World order is cutting World 3 and 7 from main progression, so the final world is still World 8! That way you still get the credits and such.

So I've had a bit of a setback with W3-Castle since I tried something a little too difficult but once I finish the level I'll just need to do some testing and then World 3 will be finished!

It seems corrupted in the patch, preventing the map from loading. Had to reset it.


bulletpoint list of my impressions
-1-1: Could use some way to get to the top of the flag. Invisible blocks, maybe? -1-2: I like the idea branching paths, though there's this permeating sense of "where tf am I" -I did notice one brick-filled gap near that looks very much like it'd hold a secret but doesn't actually lead to anything -1-3: Clever use of verticality, good flow. You don't get lost much (or at least I didn't), which can be an issue with this type of level. -The midway point red flying question block ought to be set up to not spawn the mega mush (no real use for it in this area) -The last part of with the level with the big mushroom is sorta barren of gameplay. Could use some coins or whatever -I'd simplify the look of that last pipe before the flag because it kind of hinted that there was something up there -1-Tower: Unfinished, but I like what you've got going there. Just one thing: I thought the door at the top left of the first room was a secret room/branching path. I was disappointed to discover it wasn't. In my mind, the regular way forward would've been a pipe at the top right of said room (which I neglected to check on first playthrough) or something like that. You could do that -1-4: Cool out of bounds trick. Bit weird to spawn right under pipes though -I'd put the midway point powerup farther than the mini mario pipe, you can end up wasting it if you unknowningly hit the block before going in the pipe -1-A: That pipe after the fish spawns looks enterable, but it's not. Misleading. Also, tiling mistake: you didn't use roof tiles pretty much anywhere -1-5: No issues. Strong level design -1-Castle: Last starcoin is a cool challenge as big mario

2-1: The Hammer bros at the end clip through the floor.

This mirrors the misconception in this post. They've got the right idea, but as the post right below it states, what prevents the Hammer Bro from jumping down in his example isn't the bottom of the view but instead the bottom of the 16x16 gridspace.
Therefore, in your level all you need to do is select everything (CTRL + A) and move it down by 4 blocks to solve the issue.

2-2: I really like the visuals of the second area. The two backgrounds, plus the mix of mushrooms and clouds, works very well. Maybe move the secret room pipe to the right by 1 tile? Would make it easier to aim for.


Oh, right, I don't need to test further. You've got screenshots, a download, and more than one world complete. That, and consistent strong level design with good practices. Approved.

I did edit it to alter the World order, but I guess I must have screwed something up when editing it, I never caught the issue because I never used the patch myself

Thank you for all the critiques and advice, though! I will definitely look into fixing up some of the existing levels, especially the ones in World 1 (since they're like 2 years old by this point lol). I will fix overlay 8 when I release World 3, and then I'll start work on fixing up the earlier levels! That way, I have time to implement fixes for World 3 at the same time as Worlds 1 and 2.
