I was wondering if you could make SELECT a button for dropping items from the item box...but still keep the touch functionality. I still want that to be an option.

This is possible. NewerDS used it among others. I think the code hack is in the archived ASM Hacking subforum, the Misc. Tweaks and Patches thread.
