Hey there,

As you can see in the video down there I discovered that a simple solid-on-top platform also works as a ledge but only if you hang down. Is this just a bug because Nintendo never used such a constellation in the game?

It works with all solid tiles. I think even slopes worked (in New Super Hacker Hacker Bros we used slope-ledges). It works with several sprites, too. I used it once to hang down on a swinging-platform-thingie (the ones from world 4 castle). Works with moving platforms too. You can do some pretty interesting stuff with it.

I remember accidentally discovering that behavior a while ago by using ledges. But not using solid-on-top platforms, but solid platforms.

If you hang down a ledge and slide sideways so you fall from the ledge into solid ground, you will glitch "into" the ground as if it was a ledge too. Blarg.

I'm not sure if I'd call this a bug or a quirk. Nintendo was well aware of this behavior when they were designing levels, and instead of fixing the code they fixed the levels to hide the bug:



There are TWO right-end-of-ledge objects. They have DIFFERENT tile behaviors. What is their diference? Well, the RED one forces you to "stop hanging" if you fall from the ledge while hanging. The GREEN one doesn't. Note how these two red ones are placed so you can't fall into the ground while hanging from a ledge!

What Nintendo didn't take into account was the floaty mechanics of Mini-Mario/Mini-Luigi, you can actually glitch your way out if you grab a GREEN right-end-of-ledge object close enough to the ground.

Oh wow, lol, interesting. Fail, nintendo!

They could've fixed it way easier making it if you fall into a non-ledge ground while hanging, then stop hanging. Then they wouldn't need to do these weird hacks when designing levels. Blarg.
