I personally would like NO$GBA 2.7a OR DuOS DSEMU, so I made it multi-vote.

NO$GBA for main use, it is fast, and you can remove the annoying sounds anyway...

DesMuME for quality (and slow) playing. And for great videos.

By the way...

NO$GBA 2.7a

DeSmuME 0.9.10

What are the emulator versions doing in this poll?

On my computer I use the Windows version of DeSmuME because the Linux version is pretty terrible.

On my tablet I use DraStic which runs really well on it.

(why so many thread tags?)

While it's nice to provide so many options, quite a few can be stripped.

* Ensata is illegal to have, it's Nintendo's emulator. Also it doesn't run commercial ROMs. Well actually it doesn't run anything except a few simple demos and supposedly debug ROMs built with the NitroSDK. In short, it's useless.
* DSEmu and Dualis don't run commercial ROMs either, and both are long dead.
* iDeaS also seems to be dead, and its author is an idiot so don't expect too much
* NeonDS is also dead, and lacks sound (among other things)

The only decent choices are DeSmuME and NO$GBA. The former is more accurate, but the latter is good if your PC isn't very powerful.

NO$GBA is also closed-source, completely not portable, and subject to Martin's woes (like how he stops working on it or giving signs of life for 3 years, then suddenly updates it again). Oh and you have to pay to get the last version, but I figure it's not bad, atleast he's not charging insane prices. If only he didn't disappear for 3 years making you unable to buy his shit...

DeSmuME on the other hand, is taking the same 'extreme accuracy' route as bsnes/higan, meaning it will eventually require NASA supercalculators to run at a decent speed. And it's also bloated in crap, half of which is copypasted from other emulators. And over time the code has turned into a giant fucking mess.

My personal choice is still DeSmuME. With the JIT build, you get decent speeds at the price of accuracy (but most games will run fine).

I haven't looked much into DuOS DSEMU, but it looks like a DeSmuME clone or something like that. Also, it's not very active. And the fact it's aiming at running on mobile platforms gives it that commercial stench which repels me away from it. 'Give us your money or expect ads to randomly interrupt you during your gameplay'.

Commercial ROMs don't matter, for me. That is why they're there though.
DuOS runs MKDS Beta full speed albeit slightly shit sound.

And THE EMULATOR ZONE seems to list an incorrect revision of NO$GBA, don't know why.

...Unless you are using the Linux version (and I wouldn't be surprised if the Mac version was like this too), where running at 60FPS is not one of the features and everything generally doesn't work properly.

What is the best Linux emulator, then? Because I don't know any, and if there is, does it allow patches?

At least as far as I know, what I described seems to be the best solution.
The native Linux versions (which there is multiple interfaces for) all seem to have the same problem: they limit to the wrong framerate. DeSmuME (GTK) incorrectly limits to 64FPS instead of 60, and DeSmuME (Glade) limits to 58. There's also desmume-cli, which gets this right, but as the name might suggest, it doesn't have an interface and is configured using eight million command line arguments.

There's also the DeSmuME core for RetroArch, which is... Okay, but rather lacking in terms of options. One nice thing about it though is that it supports using the touch screen with a controller, but at least right now it doesn't work properly because it's hardcoded to use the left stick, which you'd most likely want to use for the d-pad.

I use a modified DeSmuME. But really, the only modification there is, that we can make non-stretched videos. Also, I run at 60 FPS...NASA supercalculators .

DeSmuME

but you need to mess around with the settings per game, and have the latest builds.
