Hi i want to know what you think is the best OS because i'm thinking in format my laptop and i see a lot of people saying that GNU/Linux is better for them, so, keep this in mind:

-I'm not a programmer (yet).
-I've never use any Linux before in my life. (but i'd like to try it)
-I like the 'easy things' (i mean not hard to install, etc)
-I want to install it in a laptop not a PC.
-i love hacking

Well if possible, tell me your experience and why you support it (include how hard is to get programs, drivers, etc)

P.S. Please avoid those comments like:

Hey no X OS is better than X.

Remember you're doing this in your own opinion and without beign mean.

Why didn't you add Windows XP to the poll?

It's the "most usable" windows out there. Vista is terrible, and 7 is kinda a "fixed Vista" that's still not very usable IMO

Ubuntu is the best linux you can get to get started, it has good driver support and it's easy as fuck to install. If you don't like Ubuntu's Unity desktop (the weird menu at the left) you can try out Linux Mint which is basically Ubuntu but with Gnome instead of Unity. (Gnome is a more "normal" desktop environment than Unity)

Keep in mind that if you play games and all that you'll probably want to have some Windows too. Most games don't support Linux.

I like Windows 7 the most. Especially, because it is EASY and you can do anything with it. I tried Ubuntu once and I still have Linux SUSE as a VM. Both were sh*t as hell in my eyes.
Most of the programs I use are .exe
I could not do anything, when I used linux. The only thing I do in linux is C programming.

The best OS for me is Arch Linux because of all the customization you can do and the lack of bloat by default.

Though, that is probably not the OS you would want to use.
As  Dirbaio said above, you should try out Ubuntu — it's one of the easiest GNU/Linux distributions out there, and it will get you going pretty much out-of-the-box.

Edit: Can we by any chance have your laptop's specs?
Edit2:  Freeze, you can't call Linux shit because it doesn't work with your .exe files. That is completely obvious and there is a good reason for it, mainly "GNU/Linux is not Windows". Also, have you heard of WINE?

Well, of course if you use Linux you have to use Linux programs instead of Windows ones. Some programs are available for both Windows and Linux, some aren't. For those that are windows-only, there's always an alternative that works on linux, and usually free

Microsoft Office -> LibreOffice
Photoshop -> GIMP
etc etc.

There's also a thing that's called Wine, that allows to run .exe's on Linux. Complex programs usually run like shit, but if you're lucky you can get games or other programs to run quite well.

Actually, it runs really nicely if you have a good computer.
I can play Source games at the maximum graphics settings at more than 100FPS in WINE.

Well the point is Wine doesn't run a lot of Windows programs as well as Windows does...

As people have said, Ubuntu is going in a direction I do not like. I'm switching to Debian when I have enough free time.
But it is and will be true that Ubuntu is the easiest OS to install and use. In fact, it looks nicer and easier to use than Windows.

This I do not get.

Why do people not give new desktops with new ideas a chance?
I'm using GNOME Shell right now. A lot of people hate it and find it to be horrible, but I have really come to like it from using it a lot, and I find a lot of the things it does different to be a nice change from the old GNOME.
Same with Unity. I really like Unity (other than its Alt+Tab switcher, which honestly is retarded).

So, you people should really take the new stuff for a proper spin before you start hating on it. You might be surprised how well something different can work.

Well, I really like Ubuntu, it looks really cool and was very easy to install.
Getting windows apps to work on it is a bit of a task, but you can still do it.

If you do go with Ubuntu, I recommend that you wait till 12.04 comes out.
It is a "stable" build and has the least amount of bugs in it.
12.04 comes out on the 4th month of (20)12, so basically wait till the end of the month.
Keep in mind that the beta version of 12.04 is nothing like the end product though.

The only other thing I can say is, remove puppy Linux from that list.
It is the worst OS I have actually tried, It didn't support printers and didn't have a way to run proper Linux apps.
Sure, it is only 100mb, but you miss out on actual Linux.

This thread is utter bullshit.

* There's no option for Windows XP, which is still widely used.
* There's no 'other' option (the list can't be exhaustive, with all those Linux distros).
* There are too many Linux options.
* There is no 'best OS'. Each person's OS choice depends on many criteria, several of them are specific to the person and what they want to do on their OS, and some of them are subjective for sure.

I'm leaving it open as a general OS discussion thread. I'm watching this, if this turns into a huge flamewar, I'll close it.

This was already addressed in the first post- You might want to pay attention to what the thread is actually about.

Personally, I'd choose Win7. It's fairly bloaty but it's quite easy just to disable all the shit you don't need. Compatibility is increasingly high, even for the 64-bit version, and it's incredibly easy to use.

I've tried practically everything else and have found it not to my taste, or just lacking in one or two thing I love about Windows. It's odd, because I don't like Microsoft much these days, but their OS is by far my choice of OS.

In the end it's up to you to try them all and see which one you like the best. But if you're someone who doesn't have the patience for anything else, and just want to be able to settle with one thing you can easily configure and stick with. Windows 7.
You can also get a preview of Windows 8 for free from MS, but that doesn't really count. ^^

Uh yeah, sorry, it's my fault if the thread title is misleading.

Should be more like "What's the best OS for you?" or something in the like. The current title sounds like the thread is going to be a Windows bashfest or something in the like. I'm letting the OP the liberty of changing that title if they want.

Anyway, the two first points of my previous post are still valid. Windows XP is still widely used, and hasn't been included

But yeah, I admit having posted that too quick.

Back on topic now.

Windows 7 for me. Vista sucked ass when I used it, and XP is nice but Microsoft is doing everything they can to help it die
Also Linux can be confusing at times. There are some distros that are said to be user-friendly, but you need to find the well-hidden terminal if you want to do anything besides opening Facebook. And well, I can get stuff done in the terminal, but for a Windows user who's used to a GUI, it doesn't feel natural. How many Windows users use cmd on a daily basis?

Some things I want to point out:
  • You don't need the terminal for a lot of things in 'user-friendly' distros. See openSUSE's quite extensive system configuration tool, YaST for an example of this.
  • cmd can't do shit anyway.
  • People that use lack of software as an argument for Linux not being good is using an invalid argument.
  • People expecting Linux to be Windows are wrong. Its intention is -not- to clone Windows.

Of course it's not a clone of windows.. that's why people are so divided about which one is better.
It's just different.

Why use one when you can use another right?
People will choose what suits them best.

STORMENT, it comes down to you.
What are you currently using?
How do you like what you are using?

If you are using Windows and hate it, then try Linux.
if you are using an older version of Windows and find that it doesn't support cool things anymore, then upgrade windows.
Etc. etc. etc.

It really comes down to what OS you are using right now, and how you like it.

Ok if i decide to switch to Linux, i'll go with Ubuntu. The information about the computer will be later because i'm making this quick. I didn't add XP because my father thinks that it's old and he doesn't want it.
Dirbaio or  Arisotura, is possible to add it to the poll? because i can only change the title.

P.S. Title changed

No. The board provides no way of modifying polls. Only Dirbaio may change the poll via PMA.

That sounds like a Linux loving kid who's offended that someone can be using Windows instead.

I don't say that Linux is 'not good' because some of the software I use aren't available under it. It is just a reason why I don't use it.
