I have downloaded a new program yesterday in my PC (Win 7, 32-bit OS). But it's incompatible with Windows 7. It should run on Windows XP only. Unfortunately, I've got only Windows 7 at home, no Win XP.

I once googled about this problem, and there's one hope, by going to Properties>>Compatibility>>Check "Run this program in com. mode for: Windows XP (SP3)" But that still can't fix this error.
Has anyone got any ideas, on how to make a program which only compatible for Win XP work in Win 7?
Thank you so much.

When I try to install XP Mode, the set up freezes.
I can't get it to work.

Here's one thing I have to say about compatiblility mode: IT REALLY SUCKS
Why?
Microsoft bought the product Virtual PC. Which is a virtualization product like VirtualBox and VMWare Workstation. But it was never as efficient or fast as VirtualBox or VMWare Workstation. It didn't compare to them.

When Microsoft bought it, it tried to do many modifications to make an XP VM perform well on Windows 7. But even then, it still couldn't beat the performance of other products. Even when Microsoft has the source code!!!

You can read the statistics online somewhere. I don't remember what they were.

So what I recommend doing is using VMWare Workstation or VirtualBox to run your XP VM (which is what Virtual PC is doing).
One way with VMWare products:
1. Install the Windows XP Mode VM (not Virtual PC) from Microsoft.
2. Install VMWare Workstation (the full version, PM me if you want help), or install VMWare Player (free).
3. Once you get a VMWare product up and running, in the File menu there is an option to import the Windows XP Mode VM.
4. It'll convert and import. You can now run the VM. You should install VMWare Tools into the VM if you want to get the most performance out of it.

Downsides by doing this:
-Requires some modifications and file moving to make duplicates
-Only works on Windows (or the particular machine?)
-Cannot do a lot of customization.

Pros by doing this:
-Easy and it does not consume too much time
-No need to activate the VM

Another way with any virutalization product:
1. Get a Windows XP ISO. You should get a Dell OEM XP ISO if you don't want to activate safely (VMWare Workstation Only)
If you have chosen to go through the Dell OEM XP route, PM me for the extra steps to take.
2. Install your Virtualization product.
3. Create a new VM, and use the ISO to install XP
4. Customize, then run the new VM. It'll go through the XP installation process.
5. Once you get in as an admin, then you should install whatever software into the VM for that specific virtualization product (ex. VMWare's is VMWare Tools. VirtualBox's is the VirtualBox Guest Additions)
6. If you have not chosen to take the Dell OEM route, then you'll have to activate with a serial # or get a cra**.

Pros:
-More flexibility
-No dealing with vhd files (like in the other way)
-The VM can be duplicated and run on other computers and OSes.

Cons:
-Takes longer to setup

While running applications in the VM, you can switch to the Unity mode so that windows in the VM will look like they're running on your local machine. It'll make things a little nicer.

Enjoy a fast Windows XP VM!
