I was thinking we should put the number of people on #nsmbhacking on this board somewhere so we don't have to go to IRC to check how many people are there, and encourage more activity on the IRC channel (excluding bots).

What do you think?

This is actually quite possible.
A bot could listen on a port locally, then the board would ask the bot through the socket about who is on IRC, and the bot would respond with a comma-separated list of nicknames, and the board'ddo whatever with it from there.

Wouldn't the board-bot interfacing make all the pageviews slower?
I mean, the bot's coded in Java, it's slow as shit. I dunno if opening a socket to talk with the bot and wait for a response every pageview would be too much...

I'd think it'd be better to make the bot write the list of users into a file everytime someone joins/leaves and have the board read it ....

Well that'll work... but you'll be using your disk though.

Dunno. I once tried to mount a ramdisk on my previous VPS and it didn't actually work nicely. In fact it crashed the whole OS until reboot. Dunno about this one

Sorry for this stupid question, how can I use IRC? Do I have to register?

When I enter(using mibbit), it gives me random nickname and no one was there all the time.

IRC uses persistant 'channels' as chat rooms, meaning when you join, it's not always the case that someone is actually there.
The best way to go about it is to stay on the channel until someone appears.
If the random nicks you are talking about are Mini-Mario and NinaBot, those are the bots that are on the channel — they're created by  Dirbaio and me, respectively.

No, he's talking about Mibbit giving him a random username. There's a box where you can change your username before joining the channel.

Oh right.
I wonder why Mibbit even does that. Who'd want to use the randomly chosen nicknames it throws at you anyway?
