There are a lot of things like backgrounds and sprites I would like to borrow from newer ds but every time I try to edit in in NSMBeditor I get this error message.

For hacking NewerDS you need a special NewerDS editor (https://nsmbhd.net/wiki/NSMBe_Versions/#NewerSMBe_%2B_Spritedata).
