Surprised not to see a thread about this given it was a central repository for ROM hacking stuff and everything.

Here is the official announcement on their forum.

Personally, I'm devastated. Apparently it seems to be related to the recent, ramplant DMCA claims going around but I'm not sure if it's just that. Seems like Nightcrawler was intending on retiring the site due to general lack of use and/or server costs.

Given ROM hacking was one of the first big things Discord really managed to "stole" away from forums/wikis/centralised repositories like RHDN - and NSMBHD, for the record - I'm also not surprised, though.

(It's a miracle of sorts that this place even gets some level of activity and is still maintained, even though it's basically running on a bunch of duct tape and some off-colour blu-tack these days.)

Seems like a waste they're doing this. In the thread I didn't see any mention of DMCA claims, and the reasons they do give are.. meh.

Yeah, I only heard the DMCA thing from some news outlets, so figured it was worth putting in (in case someone had more info on that).

ROM hacking stuff was already disproportionately moving exclusively to Discord. Having what was objectively the biggest accessible place to find hacks and tools just shut down out of the blue is ridiculous and yet another major blow to the idea of... y'know, not having to sign up to a service/join a server for everything. The whole internet is reminding me of those shitty forums that make you sign up to see links.

As far as I thought, more people got use out of the downloads section than their forums...

... and the fact they've kind of just attempted to brush the fact they archived their most useful section under the carpet is also screwed up, too.

I agree.

So, has the forum already been made read-only? Otherwise we could grab our last chance to promote this board LOL.

I think their forums are still up. I'm not sure what their rules on the likes of off-site signature links and whatnot are, though.

The owner had gotten tired of running the site himself and was planning to move it over to a new group to host it. That new hosting group made awful comments about the original owner behind their back, so now the move is being canceled and the site is going into archive mode

I guess it's better than letting the whole thing just collapse and burn inside slowly, essentially strangling it to its death while frustrating everyone still holding onto their ever-destructing home, aka what happened to board2 ever since the end of 2011.

(and what also seems to be happening to my country since 1997...)
