Hi,

So I've recently decided to come back to NSMB hacking after many years and I gotta say, I've lost quite a bit of knowledge (obviously).

In the vanilla game, when a Castle bottom BG is set, the blocks from the Jyotyu Tileset are blue. However, for my lava castle levels, I would like them to be red, because that seems way more fitting (kinda like in NSMBW where the blocks were bright red in lava stages).

I know there is a tutorial about this that involves Hex Editing the overlay9_0 and changing the numbers in the 30cd8 Offset (depends on the ROM-region), but for me it doesn't work. I've changed the bytes of the corresponding Castle BG which is the first '01' in the table I believe and the blocks are still blue. I've tried with the BOTTOM 58: Light Grey castle(W8 Castle 1) and if my count was right, I've changed the right byte (to 02 instead of 01), but still, no luck...

I feel like my problem is pretty easy to solve but I'm stuck and I don't know what to do, I must be missing something obvious!

Nevermind I am an idiot, kinda. I didn't know you had to exit NSMBe altogether and then re-launch it for the changes in the Hex Editor to take place. Got it!

Good to know. I guess NSMBe fetches the info on start and not whenever you open a level editor.
