Okay, let me explain this in detail. Earlier today I was trying to import my world map icon graphics. Now, I already knew that each icon has 2 palettes each, so I made sure each icon only used 8 colors.

After I exported the files as a single image (export all), I put my icons in, re-colored the other parts of the world-icon-specific palettes so they would fit in the palette limit, and then imported the image back into the rom (using import all).

Despite how extremely careful I was, the palettes would still become corrupt and it would refuse to save properly. I already made sure to go through all the "safety procedures" first (view 16-color, compress/decompress, etc), but it still wouldn't work. For now, I've re-imported the original world map icons from the original NSMB, but I seriously need the custom icons for my upcoming hack.

Here is the PNG image I have been trying to import in case it's of any help:

(I have linked it because embedding ruins the transparency)

Not saving? Read my last post...

Don't forget to NOT do "Save All" and instead save what you edited individually. Click that "Save" button.

You know, reading things is useful. Really. Unless even that isn't working?

Then if it's the case, I have no idea...

Yeah.

I already tried the normal save button quite a while ago... it still gave me the error message. It doesn't seem to make a hint of difference.

Error message? What error message?

If it's what I think, you might have to use an older version of NSMBe to edit that.

This error message right here:

If I click Continue, the image saves, but the palettes get corrupted.

Oh, yeah, it's THAT error. You can try restarting the editor, but I bet you have to use an older/specific NSMBe version for it to work.

If it's a specific version, I don't know which. Just try any older revisions

Thanks for the advice, but the problem is far from fixed. I tried an older version of the editor and didn't get the message, but my palette still got corrupted nonetheless! It's as if there's nothing that will fix this!

It looks like this might be a problem with NSMBe, I can take a look and try to fix it. What files are you trying to import those graphics into?

I'm trying to import the graphics to UI_O_1O_course_select_d.nce.bncd (coupled with the palette of a similar name located directly below the file). As I've said before, the palette gets corrupted even though I made sure to use no more than 8 colors per world icon.

Looks to me like the issue is that you have every icon in every pallete, try removing the icons from every other row. (Sorry if you don't understand, I'll try and show gou later.)

And damn, das some sweet art u got.

The problem is that you've made the copies of your world map icons have the same shape, but all one color. If you look at what the graphics look like when you extract the defaults with "Extract all bitmaps with all palettes" you will notice that the icon copies use the corresponding colors of the wrong palettes.

You could try to fix this by using a variation of this technique, but it would probably be really hard with 16 palettes. I'm going to see if I can add something to NSMBe to make this easier.

Actually this already exists in NSMBe if you do what  SaturnYoshi said.

Import this and it should work.

It appears pirahnaplant's edit actually works!

Oh wait, not quite. The world map icons show up, but everything else gets completely corrupted:

I have not been having a good weekend. Thanks for the edited image though.

Ah, that's because another file shares the same palette. You can work around this, but it will require you to do a bit more work.

- Double click UI_O_1P_course_select_d.nce.bncd to open it in the graphics editor.
- Double click UI_O_1P_course_select_u_ncg.bin to open it in the same graphics editor.
- Add the palette like normal.
- Export all bitmaps with all palettes.
- Put your world map icons on this new image and make sure to delete the parts that I did in the image I gave you before.
- Import all bitmaps with all palettes

Alright, I've just tried the above. I think I've created a monster.

Seriously though, what am I doing wrong this time? I will note that I opened the palette before the bitmaps, but that wouldn't make a difference, right?

I'm not sure what you did wrong there. I just tried it myself and it worked fine.

Here's the image file I used. Make sure you open the bitmaps in the same order I specified and ensure that View in 4bpp format is checked.

If you still can't get it to work, here are the files with your icons in them.
UI_O_1P_course_select_d.nce.bncd
UI_O_1P_course_select_o_ud_ncl.bin
UI_O_1P_course_select_u_ncg.bin

Wow, it actually works perfectly now!

It turns out the reason why I got the "monstrosity" from above was because the second bitmap I had was wrong. I was using a file that had only a 1-letter difference in the name (pretty easy to confuse).

Anyway, very happy that it's all sorted now. Even the grayed out versions of the icons work as well! I seriously could not thank you enough!

(sorry reply is so late; was very busy with things)
