Well, I cheaped out on my host (hosting24) for my forum, and it seems as if I'm paying for it. They have cpu usage limits (which are insanely low), which tend to cut off my users when we get a flux of activity. Also, the server tends to be down quite a bit, which irritates my users. What host would you guys recommend? I don't need a lot of space or bandwidth, just a place that has a good uptime and is fairly affordable.

Btw, what host is this site using? It has good uptimes, and the loading times are great.

(also, if this doesn't belong in this section, feel free to move it)

http://www.cinfu.com/vps/.

I have the VPS4 plan. I'm paying it triennally, and I got that 50% off promo for the first 3 years, so it's a good deal.
Though they have rised the prices since I bought it. When I bought it, the monthly price paid trienally was just 13 eur.

Though I got that one because I also wanted a Minecraft server
If you want web hosting only you could get away with a smaller, cheaper VPS (probably will work well too), or even just shared hosting (I haven't tried their shared hosting, I dunno if it's good or not)

Cool

And if you finally decide to go with a VPS (either there or elsewhere) make sure to check this out:
http://forum.linode.com/viewtopic.php?p=40679

Installing apache, PHP, mysql, etc might seem an easy task (sudo apt-get install blahblah) but in fact it's easy to screw it up.

I did screw it up with this server. I had the server for a while before I set up this board. Everything seemed to work fine, until I opened this to the public. The load made apache crumble, and pages were taking ages to load.

I wiped everything and followed the instructions there and everything works awesome now.

Dirbaio, you don't use the Aptitude ncurses interface? I always use it.

Why didn't you read the man pages and Wikipedia articles? Most tutorials don't give you a conceptual understanding of how things work, which is necessary most of the time when maintaining and updating your server.

But, thanks for sharing the info.

That's what I always do
And still, I screwed something up.

Dirbaio, just run "aptitude"

(Should run as root).

That's one of the first things I learned when I started Debian.

http://www.webs.com
It's free but your website needs the stupid .webs.com part at end.

Also you can get premium which costs money, but gets rid of the .webs and un-wanted ads.

Your welcome

Also, this would make a great poll!

Heh, you're going nowhere with that host. It may have a free plan which is good, but the paid plans are shit.

For instance, the server this board's running on costs 13 eur per month, about the same as the Pro plan. Now look:

15 emails -> I have unlimited emails.
100 GB/month bandwith -> I have unlimited too.
5 GB disk space -> I have 150 GB
And It's a VPS, meaning I can run stuff like game servers, Subversion, SSH

And, for free hosting without ads and much more space and bandwith, see freehostia.com. It even has MySQL and PHP.

so, LOL.

EDIT: and you're not going to get true domain names (no .webs.com or .freehostia.com) for free. These always cost some money. They are really cheap though, you can get a .net domain on GoDaddy for 8 eur/year or so)

webs.com sucks ass. Niko had a forum there a few years ago. We had set up a staff-only forum, but every time we posted in that forum, the thread's title would end up in the 'latest threads' thing everyone could see. Derp. (also it would never remember my login even though I'd tick the checkbox)

Here's a quick ad-less free hosting reference:

* bplaced.net
Pros: fast servers, good feature set
Cons: ban registrations from France, ban Japan/China from their servers, ToS page is in German with no English translation, you have to log in every 3 months or your account gets suspended
(derivate: square7.ch. More HDD space, but forced ads, including (ew) popunders. Same as bplaced.net otherwise)

* zoka.cc
Pros: fast servers (though, servers from derivates such as x50 and 20x are slow as shit), good feature set (more HDD than bplaced)
Cons: sites hosted there may be automatically considered bad sites by MalwareBytes, considering it blacklists x50 and 20x. Also, adds statcounter code at the bottom of pages (invisible but goodbye W3C validation).

* comoj.com/comyr.com
Seems fast and nicely featured, I never tried it though so can't judge it. However, Niko has an account there so you can ask him...

YAY, german.
If these hosters are Advertisment free, how do they get money?

I guess they do it as a marketing plan. Many people will sign up for the free service. Some of them will see that it's good, and then will order a paid service.

Still I don't think that hosting free websites is that expensive, once you have the servers and such. The most expensive thing is probably bandwith and CPU time since HDD space is really cheap now. Most "free" sites are not-well-known sites so they have low bandwith and CPU costs, so they probably can afford a free service.
