By opening "I_item_ncg.bin" and "d_2d_A_J_jyotyu.ncl.bin - 1" together there is a sprite similar to the Lightning Bolt in Mario Kart, and from what I remember, this sprite is not used in NSMB. Is this an unused sprite from a Beta version or something?

Nope. Its more likely they planned to have it and made the graphics, but they didn't coded the sprite.

They only let the graphics and a sound file, indeed.

He edited the sprite data of the extra item.


EDIT:


Different sprite datas make it bug a lot. Also, it is possible to spawn a Mega-Mushroom trough the roulette block. The way of spawn is different depending on the sprite data. Sometimes the item spawns just like spawning the items from bottom screen (appearing on top, then falling down).

EDIT2:

Seems like you can even spawn brick-tiles (the ones when you destroy bricks)

It can spawn every item the game. Even the mushroom 1up.

And it can show sprite images (like placeholders, or even the Lightning Bolt). I did a very quick example-test-level (based on 1-tower) and moved it to 1-4, and stuff so it don't crashes so much.

I will show a video of it later.

Note: Ray, you are discovering stuff I already discovered. Makes me wut

I don't think so. Btw, we can only see the destroyed brick tile when the block isn't hit yet, but not spawn it.

The sprite data of the roulette block. The nybble which is responsible for the extra item.

I noticed that some years ago whith NSMBe4. (4.7)

Also, the sprite 228 can show images from other images files.

And it sometimes tries to use sounds that crashes the game (maybe it tries to use non-existent sounds).

So, to browse it without to crash the game, I used a world music in the level.
Less sounds, but no crash.

So is this unused sprite data (that is not in the sprite db) that changes the graphics of what the 4th item is? Changes what the 4th item is? Or changes the 4th item spawn sound?

I don't really understand this...
