Has anyone encountered freezing in the retail, without cart-removal?
I want to know this, so I can tell someone who has the Wii U VC version, so they can try and get the debug screen up (which will allow us to see if the build date is different).

Just to clarify, are you asking if there is reliable method of freezing the game in the Nintendo DS version without removing the game cartridge? Or are you asking for a method to freeze the VC Release? Because if a method exists in the original DS release, it may have been patched in the VC version. I cannot say that for sure though, because I don't own a Wii U.

E: I looked on a Super Mario Wiki page that lists known glitches in NSMB and found nothing related to freezing the game. Closest thing I found was this cool trick, but I doubt it's of any use to you:

Any version. Just anything that doesn't require physical things that can't be done in the Wii U emulator.

Hm, interesting, I watched a video of the NSMBDS release and there's either some emulator problems with sounds, or they muffled all the sound effects for some reason. So, there might be some changes.

Strange.

I think that is actually how it sounds when you plug headphones into a DS. It certainly reminded me of that.

Okay. I guess you must be talking about something else. They've probably done something to make it sound nicer with large speakers.

I know this is a bit of a silly suggestion, but I don't suppose there is any way to apply Action Replay codes/cheats to an emulated Wii U Virtual Console release of the game? Again, I highly doubt that is even possible, but I just thought I would mention it anyway.

No. If we had homebrew like that for Wii U, we could probably just dump the ROM
