I think, that this hack just needs a story, I mean, the original game, didn't really contain a story: Peach being kidnapped > Mario goes after Bowser > Mario beats bowser.

But now we have the Hub world idea, we could make a nice story perhaps?
I was thinking about this:

It was a normal day in the Mushroom Kingdom: Mario is walking with Peach and the Toads were crafting.
Then suddenly, Bowser appears with Bowser Jr. Bowser grabs to the troat of Mario and Peach. Peach is screaming: 'MARIO'. But, Mario, was already lying unconscious, in Bowser's hand. 'MARIO, do something!' But it was already too late, Bowser brings Mario and Peach too a giant building. He is setting off Mario on the Ground Floor, and locks the door.
Then, he takes Peach with him, and goes to the Controlling Chamber: A room on the highest floor. It's a room containing a lot of camera's, buttons and levers.
From there, he binds Peach, and turns on the camera's.
'Now, Peach. We're going to watch the whole adventure of Mario, from the beginning to the end. Mario has to figure a way out of this building. If he succeed, I'll spare you for this time. If he dies, I'll take you with him. Heh heh..."

But this is just an idea, and not finished. Feel free to suggest your idea(s) about the story here

I think Bowser strangling Mario unconscious or anything dark like that is a little unsettling.

And I don't think Bowser would be so kind to give Mario a chance to succeed in his adventure. Bowser purely wants to win, to beat Mario.

What if Bowser kidnaps both Mario and Peach, and Mario wakes up in the hub room of Bowser's Castle, and similar to Super Mario 64, he has to complete various levels and worlds to progress through the castle.

Well, maybe you're right, the idea was inspired from the game Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors. A pretty dark game.
So then it should be:
Peach is screaming: MARIO, but Mario wasn't be able to do anything, he was in the hand of Bowser.

Hmm... I don't know, maybe Bowser wants to play with Mario now he get the chance. And, maybe, we can do that Bowser doesn't held his promise, and is going to beat Mario. And then, the final battle awaits ?
Again, this idea was inspired from 999.

Well the HUB would have to be always in a castle themed, so dunno.

We could, however, if this story takes into account, for the first or intro level be in a castle level, then mario get outs/finishes the castle level, to appear then onto the hub of the autumn grassland world
(mario escapes from the prison/castle bowser left him in tat was located in the atumn grassland world)

And Mario has to reach Bowser, which is on the top of the castle, to rescue Peach.
This would make Mario go up, floor by floor, so what we were planning on the ASM hacks thread makes sense

The only thing I dont like is that the hub would be all castle themed...

I thought the hub would be unique to match the world theme

But nonetheless, its a nice idea...

Yeah, I really like this idea. The floor by floor is really cool, reminds me of Mario vs. Donkey Kong.

Dunno, but I don't like the idea of a castle as the HUB at all
IMO, the different settings for the HUB for each theme seems more appealing.

And actually, the BG doesn't matter at all. The hub levels could be in another slot for each world, so that means another BG could be used, but they will use the castle tileset.

Well, we could make several variations of the castle tileset. One for each floor/part/whatever. We can make the hub have 8 areas, or more. It can be done.

We could also have the castle have more areas, like garden, balconies, or the rooftop
The secret worlds (4 and 7) could take place in them. But we don't need to keep the world themes, or even the concept of "world". Remember, the world map is going to be completely removed

We could do this for example:

Mario starts in the castle basement. He's there because Bowser has imprisoned him there after capturing Peach. He manages to get out, and goes to the first floor.
The real game starts in there. There are the levels. Also we can make it so that when Mario gets a certain number of star coins, he can open a door to the final level of the world or something. And then we can make Mario go up to the next floor. And so on.

Also to make it less boring we could add extra quests, for example in the castle garden, or outside the castle or something...

We can be very very creative with this >

And the idea for the secret area like the courtyard, balcony and rooftop sounds nice

Considering they are no worlds, we will only have to take in account the level slots.

So the amount of level slots (not areas) equals the amount of doors and pipes that will lead to a level

the only problem is that its kinda like SM64...

Anyway, I was talking with dirbaio about that issue, and I think it would be better use custom backgrounds that are castle walls, but have a theme "painted" over it to match the world theme.

Click Here to see what I mean. You can see that beach background has some bricks in it. We could create backgrounds that use this type of combination. (Of course, shwing more that its actually a castle wall, unlike that pic)

Also, we can have an extra area for each hub, and also, dirbaio suggested that we can also have segments of the game like a secret hub for new levels, like a courtyard/garden, rooftop, etc.

Im fine with that even if I dont like the idea of a castle hub at all

And that wallpaper seems pretty nice, are we be able to fit all the backgrounds in the hub?

Yes. We can have an area for one hub per world, meaning each hub will have its respective fitting background.

Also, that secret hubs I am referring to are pretty much like world 4 and 7 in NSMB, or like world 9 from NSMBW.

But definitely, there will be secret levels in the main worlds hub
(and bear in mind, that we don't exactly have a limit of 8 hubs. We can have much more )

If the problem is that all level would be like a castle-themed. We could combine  gridatttack,  RiksKing and SM64 ideas.
That means in each hub there's painted wall and that Mario can go into the walls into the levels, which is still in castle but with new alike environments, like simulation. Bowser's watching from above and control the simulation environments in each hub/level. And Bowser could say "With these engines and fake worlds, Mario would be lost in my castle forever! Bwahaha." Something like that. But Mario manage to escape those simulation because of powers of Star-Coins, so Mario can find an exit. (Flagpole)

But it's kinda like SM64 afterall...

I still say doors are more fitting. Its wading too much mario 64, and IMO, its not that good.

We could change the graphics for the doors too, or make a decorative frame for the levels surrounding the doors to disntic them. Or use the big castle and boss doors instead to enter levels.
