New Super Mario Bros. +, or more commonly shortened to NSMB+, is an incomplete New Super Mario Bros. DS hack created by Tierage in which was first created May 15, 2014 and released for World 1 testing a few days later. The hack revolves around keeping to the original style of the Super Mario series' levels while still "adding a new experience". NSMB+ has changes on the levels, tilesets, and some textures.

The name New Super Mario Bros. + was originally used by hamza62240 for an unstarted hack, but Tierage used it anyways without knowing of the project. This led to some discussion, but no action was taken.

1. Production

The Alpha versions of the hack were first made by Tierage when he first joined the site. They were unreleased at first but a couple short videos of the levels were released on YouTube. The first full version, 1.0.0, was published in a forum thread with all the levels in World 1.

On the same day after receiving some feedback, 1.1.0 was released in which fixed some bugs and changed some of the levels and their tilesets. 1.2.0 came out two days later, bringing in the first World 2 level. Much later on July 8th of 2014, a large update known as "the big update" came out, NSMB+ 1.3.0. It added all of the levels up to the start of 3-1 and it revised a lot of the World 1 levels. Tileset changes occurred as well.

At the end of the month on July 30th, 2014 another big update was released, 1.4.0. This update not only changed the title screen logo and fixed some bugs but it also added all of the World 3 levels. However, Tierage said that he was not too satisfied with the direction his level design in the hack was leading to, so he canceled the hack. At the end of August, he said that the hack will be in development again and he is starting on version 1.5.

2. Level Design

As mentioned, the level design of New Super Mario Bros. + focuses on capturing the casual feel of Super Mario levels but with a twist to see new content and experiences. However, in the development of the last few World 3 levels, Tierage felt that his hack was going in a bad direction with level design. He felt that the level development was getting lazy and the content was getting more and more bland. Because of this, he has considered canceling or at least putting his hack on hold to try and see what he can do better.
