So, what is your favourite romhack? Is it a hack of NSMBDS, like Newer or the Clone Tag Team series, or a hack of any of the other games in the NSMB series for Wii, 3DS or Wii U (or Switch)? Or maybe a Super Mario 64 hack like the masterpieces made by Kaze, or Star Road, or a hack of SM64DS, either one of the many SM64 hacks ported to DS or entirely new adventures for Mario and co. Or one of the bazillion SMW hacks, a hacking scene so advanced even baby's first hack has custom ASM thanks to the helpful community, a scene featuring jewels like the New Super Mario World series and the swear jar-fueling kaizo hacks which make you carefully jump and spin between Munchers and Grinders. Or do you prefer a custom extraterrestrial voyage, playing a hack of SMG1/2? Or maybe your favourite hack is a hack of good ol' SMB or SMB3, YI or SMO, hell, even SMBW already has hacks! And don't forget spinoffs like Mario Kart, the RPGs or Luigi's Mansion. Or maybe you're more fond of a non-Mario hack. Catching 'em all in a Pokémon FireRed hack with Mega-Evolution added, or do you know what the eff a Sanic hax is, and you like speeding through custom zones... and don't forget Smash, Zelda, Kirby and the many Minecraft mods!
So... what's your favourite romhack/game mod? The only rule: no advertizing your own hacks! My favourite hack is SM64: Last Impact by Kaze, because the story is good, the level design is above average (most SM64 hax are just towers in the sky ) and the gimmicks, power-ups and level entrances are very ingenious. And don't get me started on the creative bosses! Honourable mentions for Super Mario 256 by Josh65536 and Star World by Skelux (SM64DS hacks, unreleased, NewerDS by the Newer Team, Endless Earth by Posted by albinosaur a.k.a. I like many hacks, it's hard to choose a favorite one, and I've played many hacks from many games such as NSMB, SM64, SMW and two SMB3 hacks that I've played ages ago, I think I'd rate these as my personal favorite ones:
-NSMB: SMB The New Worlds, Clone Tag Team 2, Newer DS, NSMBUDS and NSMB For Super Players (cancelled hack) -SM64: Super Mario 74, Shining Stars 3 & repainted, the Star Revenge series (specially 6.25), Ztar Attack 2 & Rebooted, Serene Fusion, Another Mario Adventure, Escape From The Jail Definitive Edition, SM64 Decades Later and many others -SMW: NSMW Twelve Magic Orbs Powered Up, NSMW2 Around the World and Super Luigi Land (I haven't played many SMW hacks but the few ones I've played were really good, and I'm willing to play some others) _________________________ My YouTube Channel |

The Super Mario 64 hack Beyond the Cursed Mirror is a good one too, IMO. The RPG elements and the Paper Mario-ish story make it like the lovechild of SM64 and the PM series. Plus, Hammer Bros. and the Boomerang Pipe, which is essentially the Boomerang Flower, but with a different appearance.
What I like so much about SM64: Decades Later is how the hack aims to take vanilla SM64's courses and remix and expand them, reminding me of the aim of my own SM64DS hack, so the admiration is mainly because I take it personally in a positive way, but I also like the gimmicks with the different types of blocks, and falling in a pit doesn't instakill Mario anymore, and instead takes him back to the last unslippable ground he stood on (à la Comet Observatory). Plus, buffed swimming. Everyone's wet dream. I also remember Star Revenge: Neo Blue Realm for its hilarious secret slide level found in a toilet! Call it The Shitty Slide. Shining Stars had good courses, but the music IMO killed it - it was unfitting for the respective courses, and it featured instruments already overused in N64 ports. |

Oh yeah, I've heard of Beyond The Cursed Mirror, but I've never played it, that's on my list of hacks to play. Also, Shining Stars didn't really have overused instruments, remember that, like most Mario games, the soundfonts tend to be pretty limited, also, Pie (the creator of Shining Stars) is a great composer and he had made soundtracks for many hacks over the years.
Posted by Staryu Trek But why should I not hold anything when Fail Warping or using a Bumper? Does that cause glitches? One shouldn't tell the player to not do this or that, they should fix the harmful glitches before releasing the hack. The bumpers are not glitchy, when you hold the jump button or any direction, it'll change your direction/route in the air, and the game tells you to not hold anything because most bumpers are set up so you don't have to do so (basically automatic movement), that's why. _________________________ My YouTube Channel |
