everyone, what do you want the board to be?

For me, the ideal NSMBHD is a place where one can get help concerning hacking NSMB (DS, Wii, 2 and U), share one's NSMB series games hack's progress and screenshots and share one's NSMB series games hacks, but also a place where one can just relax, have fun and chat about random stuff. I've always compared this board to Kuribo64, which has the above mentality (but replace "NSMB series games" with "SM64DS and SMG1/2"). Also, I think the board and the NSMBCentral Discord should be two seperate things that shouldn't influence each other. For example, both NSMBHD and K64 have a forum dedicated to NSMB2 hacking, but for neither board this is redundant. They're two separate things, even though some hacks have hack threads on both sites. Similarly, one should be able to choose whether to focus one's posting behaviour on the board or on the 'Cord.

That'd be my ideal NSMBHD.

EDIT because ninja'd: agreed,  KingYoshi. The board worked just as fine before the cleanup IMO, and it's totally true that Discord is lightyears far from being lurker-friendly. And that's what boards are: lurker-friendly. For example, forum game threads like my fave, Corrupt-a-Wish, are just as - if not more - fun to read as to participate in. And I've been lurking here for months before regging today.

Yea, I think Staryu makes a good point too. I think that in a way we're seeing the Discord and board co-existing as a problem when it isn't.

im presonally fine with most of these changes. general conversation happens much more often in the discord (and we still have a general chat here) and trimming down the subforum count makes it less ambiguous as to where to post what— since the boards not all that active atm, we dont really need all that many subforums anyhow. my only gripes are with the trash name change and all the darkened channel names being out in the open, which is kinda uggo

It's not a problem unless it's made into one by misusing each component.

I saw a post from crook responding to someone asking for an up-to-date file or something with "it's on the discord, join there", which is extremely counterintuitive to the very purpose of a forum thread.

It'd be like making a thread on here and then muting the entire Discord in order to force people to use the board for discussion.

I don't like the idea of everything ending up in the General NSMB Hacking subforum when that's not necessary. I think the subforums work better as distinctions than those tags.

I am not de-organizing the board- that sounds like a headache.

This feels like it's in opposition to the Discord- from what I understood, people on the Discord don't really want to register to the board just to help out one person asking a question here. I have certainly noticed how this thread went completely unanswered. This is something I believe the code modders would be well-equipped to answer.

Unfortunately, the two communities have to influence eachother since we're hacking the same game, sharing the same discoveries, tools, documentation, etc.

It's not. If we left it exactly the way it was before this entire conversation happened, nothing gained/lost.

However, I think that it's wise to try and leverage each of the platforms strengths.

Discord strengths being the "quick question to answer time" and the IRC-vibe of it housing general conversation.

Board strengths being "searchability", the uploader, and it being hosted by a member instead of 3rd party.
This is not all inclusive, just things off the top of my head

That. Why do we have to divide tasks between NSMBCCord and NSMBHD, if they can co-exist as two separate, full-fledged entities. In such a case, one could choose between the board, the 'Cord or both - a lurker for example (and there are often more lurkers on any board than users) would choose the board because here they don't need to register.

ftr, thats cause that question was already asked in the discord by said poster (before they made the nsmbhd thread) and discussed there (the answer was "youd need a new code hack or youd have to make due with the actor spawner one" pretty much). snoopys question, for comparison, wasnt asked in the discord, so i inqured about it here (its probably randomization tbh)

I feel like the board has to give up too much whereas it's not necessary. There's already a Discord invitation link at the top of the website. And I don't think that the changes made now (archiving half of the subforums) is going to change anything for the board or the community in terms of activity. So it feels kinda unnecessary. I think the better thing to focus on is making those new tutorials that Thierry talked about in this thread's first post.

And I still think the General NSMB Hacking forum is going to end up messy and that the categories we had before made it cleaner and easier to find threads by topic. This merge is no improvement.

That's fair, but then this itself is an issue- there's no way for people on the board to know when something was asked and solved on the Discord.

Anyway. The consensus I'm seeing here seems to have shifted a bit, so I'll say this. I'm open to de-archiving the forums if you want to use them- I don't mind at all. I just want nobody to have like, a problem with it.

@ KingYoshi: Making text tutorials is always a good thing. Sure, video tutorials can be found on YT, but a text tut can be followed at one's own tempo. So yeah, I'd adore to see these tutorials getting posted and I'll also read them when they're up, despite not being a NSMB hacker.
@Thierry: Sure thing, from what I've read, most people here want the changes reverted. So I think most people want the threads to be de-archived again.

Would it hurt anything to see how it goes having the forums stay archived for a bit? It doesn't seem to be that difficult to archive/unarchive a forum, so we could always revert it back later if it doesn't pan out the way we thought it would.

I personally don't mind if the subforums get archived/unarchived either, but there are still some threads that contain useful information + tools, gathering and centralizing the tools and information is all that needs to be done

@ Mr. Ztardust: But archiving the subforums doesn't mean those resources immediately get inaccessible - it only means the threads inside are closed.

The info and tools still would need to be gathered and centralized though, if the subforums get archived those tools and info could get lost in a corner or would be a little difficult to find

Making text tutorials is always a good thing. Sure, video tutorials can be found on YT, but a text tut can be followed at one's own tempo.

Video tutorials cannot be reworked once they are published while text tutorials can, therefore the latter are usually more up-to-date because they are easier to maintain that way.

Also; I'll be making the tutorials either way, archived subforums or not.

I don't mind waiting, but from what I gathered it will give a more "inactive/abandoned/obsolete" image of the board which I think is what  KingYoshi had an issue with.

Making a thorough FAQ will answer a lot of questions people having issues might have, reducing the need to search through all of the past queries.

"archived" does not mean "tucked into a corner out of view". I will not be doing that, period.

@ Mr. Ztardust: Yeah, you're right, interpreted your post incorrectly. Anyway, a most ideal place for the "gathered and centralized" resources would be... the tutorials Thierry is planning to write! So I really look forward to those, as they will help the new New Super Mario Bros. (twice the word new in a row, yay) hackers a lot!
@Thierry: I didn't say that if the subforums get de-archived, the tutorial wouldn't be written, as I am pro-the tutorials. You should really write them, and I hope that, by writing them with all your heart, they will be the best-written tutorials on the board!

To help gather our thoughts, I made a thread with a poll to vote on. What should we do with the board.

Yay! The hacking subforums have been de-archived! Too bad that Featherland is still archived. Welp, playing forum games in General Chat it is, then! I might start some forum games over in that forum somewhere between now and next week if nothing changes and hope they actually get activity and don't get trashed because postcount++. And Computers, Programming and Technology was actually quite useful when you wanted to talk about modding game consoles, of course.
