That would require ASM hacking I guess. Either that, or finding a 3D sprite you're not going to use, and that cam be made to overlap the star coin.

Otherwise, star coins are like Mario. Because they're 3D, you can't overlap them with 2D tiles.

Yep, take a 3D sprite and put it in the level. Put the star coin to the same place and set the star coin to "behind".
Then it will be behind 3D textures. (It is used in the original game with the fences)

By that I meant an object that uses 3D textures, for instance the water in the jyotyu tileset or the animated sand in the desert tileset. Just recolor the 3d textures they use and put these objects inside your level.
